The Telegraph has another interesting list.

50 best cult books - Telegraph: "Our critics present a selection of history's most notable cult writing. Some is classic. Some is catastrophic. All of it had the power to inspire."

Catcher In The Rye: great. Too kill a Mockingbird: great. Chariots of The Gods: peew! Might have made a decent SF novel.

It is a pretty diffuse list that can include so many commonplace items, and an odd one that then complains about some of its own inclusions (such as STORY OF O).

I don't get how they define "cult" despite the explanation given, as I don't see how a lot of those count as "cult" books, including Mockingbird.

Still, there are some good choices there.

There is a fairly wide range of books on there, which you wouldn't expect to see on a list of 'cult' books.

I remember reading THE STRANGER in high school. I wouldn't say I loved it, but it was good.
