Top 10: Worst Movie Sequels

Top 10: worst movie sequels of all time: "So, without further adieu, here is the worst of the worst, the “baddest” of the bad, the “Oh my God, I hope whoever had the idea for this film never has kids because stupidity is hereditary”…Top 10 Worst Movie Sequels of All Time."

Is it just me, or are there others out there who, when they see something like "without further adieu," want to find an unconcealed weapon and go looking for the writer? It's probably just me, getting cranky in my old age.

I know they're bad but I love those Mummy movies.

Without further adieu, I agree. Sorry, I couldn't resist.

Yes, but what would the Simpsons be without further Apu? Or Disney's Aladdin without further Abu? Or great music without further kazoo?

Please excuse me. I didn't get much sleep last night.

Adieu.

Aliens 3. All the prints should be burned, the director -screenwriter shot and the actors beaten for showing such bad judgment. The same goes for the second Banderas Zorro flick except ad the actors as well.

i have a similar problem with "by and large."

i didnt see anything especially wrong with the phantom menace. it had darth maul in it. so that automatically takes the phantom menace off the list. if they put darth maul in the other nine movies they wouldnt be on the list either.

No, you're (not your) not alone, Bill.

The one I encounter in most books I read is one of the characters "hissing" a word without an 's' in it.

Try it.

Worst ever: the Speed sequel, Grease 2, the last 3 Star Wars movies (sorry, jj, but really) all come immediately to mind.

Interesting - it now reads "without further ado" so maybe someone read your blog!

Which Jaws movie was the one where the shark blew up like a bad car crash? That one.

Jeff

'protstes' - better have that checked

Yeah, obvious typo that got pointed out...at least he listens and fixes it!

Doesn't it seem these days as if people were put in the world for no other reason than to aggravate you? ~ Ed Howe

Got the bored dismissive look yesterday from a young lady when I was in a cigarette shop buying a carton of Pall Malls, and I explained it's a proper name and pronounced "Pell Mell". I've gotten the same response from clerks in bookstores and on the phone ordering books when I tell them how to pronounce an author's name. Gotten the same attitude from most doctors, lawyers, teachers and writers I've known, vast difference between being trained and cultivating what JDM called "an educated climate of mind" in his last MgGee, a treatise for the Florida Center for the Book called. "Reading for Survival" - a Socratic dialogue between Travis and Meyer about the value of reading (a bit bad tempered in tone, I have a feeling MacDonald, like myself and a number of people I know, had lost a friend to brain damaging born again Fundy Xian movement of the '80s).

Remember the stupid cliché of saying something you didn't mean and then exclaiming "NOT!"? I opined at the time that anyone who said it should be struck upon the head with a bung starter giving them knots upon their noggin. I love people I know who are far from the sharpest crayon in the box who utter a clichéd observation with a tone like they thought it up themselves rather are just parroting something they heard, i.e. "Been there. Done that."

The people i'd like most to shoot, or sterilize them and their kids, are the dismissively anti-intellectual 99% of American's devoid of critical thinking skills, largely ignorant of science, history, etc. that dismissively say "That's just your/their opinion" esp the brain dead incult that think the quality and value of works of art or reasoned ideas are "merely' each individuals opinion.

The problem with the 'net is as Harlan Ellison pointed out:

"When they say, "Gee, it's an information explosion!" --no, it's not an explosion, it's a disgorgement of the bowels is what it is. Every idiotic thing that anybody could possibly write or say or think can get into the body politic now --where before things would have to have some merit to go through the publishing routine, now, anything. And all you're getting is an explosion of useless crap, which added to the other useless crap that was being done originally, only makes it that much worse."

*****

Actually the first two Mummy movies were pretty decent (I would have like to seen better CGI on the giant scorpion in the first; it was more video game CGI – a step above Sci Fi Channel movie CGI - than some of the better CGI some movies have had). I haven't seen the third movie yet. I’m dreading the Wolfman and the Creature From The Black Lagoon remakes. Actually Universal which hasn't been run by anyone with any sense for at least over a half a century, ditched plans to do a 3-D Creature From The Black Lagoon remake and opted to do Jaws 3-D. Jaw: The Revenge is priceless if only for the scene where Michael Caine swims from his sinking plane to the Ellen Brody's boat and climbs up on deck completely dry.

Doc,
You do have some good points there...but, what about writing for your audience?

I post of the Top 10 Worst Movie Sequels is geared toward the public that love to talk about bad cinema and bash poor film-making.

This is not the same crowd that took AP English in high school.

What's wrong with appealing to that 99% (as you put it) by writing in a way they would and say things that they understand? Hell, in a way they would enjoy reading it?

I think all writing has it's place. If all writing was a pretentious as yours, I'd never read again.

Just my opinion.

Ha! Ironic...a typo.

Meant to say "A post of the Top 10..."

Cap'n Bob said...

So there were no bad sequels before 1988?

What bothers me, Doc, is the misuse of the word "myself." As in "...like myself and a number of people I know..." A word to the wise froma wiseguy.

WV: Truck. Hmmm, that's a tough one.

Cap'n Bob said...

That's "from a wiseguy." Nothing like a typo to undermine a usage lesson.

When I see "without further adieu" i want to bid adieu to the perpetrator, with no further adieus bid. But then I suppose this is much adieu about nothing.

The clearly never saw Smokey and the Bandit III or Cannonball Run II just to mention two. They both just happen to star Burt Reynolds but that's probably a coincidence. And what about those three Psycho sequels, and the one with Hannibal Lecter as a young psychopath?

Fred Blosser said...

In several cases, the original movie was needless too. THE MASK. XXX. BLUES BROTHERS (maybe someday, someone will explain to me why people found Belushi funny).

Most Sequels Do Suck said...

Yeah, I agree with The Mask...but say what you want about XXX, it was just a fun action movie. Not Oscar worthy, not ground-breaking, maybe a bit cliched, but just enjoyable mind-numbing action (The sequel is one of the worst films I've ever seen, even if it wasn't a sequel).

Blues Brothers is a comedy classic, and Belushi was a great comedian/actor. You can just tell that he completely embraced his characters and really brought them to life (unlike actors who always "look" like they're acting). The sequel to this falls right in line with the XXX sequel.

It's just hard to narrow bad sequels to a small list. A better one would be "Top 10 sequels that didn't suck."

So, there's obviously a ton that could/should be included in the "Worst" list.
