I Don't Know Much about Art, . . .

The Press Association: Heap of dust on art prize shortlist: "A whale's skull, a heap of dust made up of the remains of a jet engine and a workman's naked backside are among the artworks featuring in a display by this year's shortlisted Turner Prize artists.

Roger Hiorns, Enrico David, Lucy Skaer and Richard Wright are the artists in the running for the award, which is worth €25,000 to the prize winner and €5,000 for each of those shortlisted.

Among the exhibits at Tate Britain is a heap of metal dust from an atomised passenger jet engine by Hiorns."

The Turner always creates a lot of controversy. I'd like to see the one thing mentioned that's not on display: the bedsit lined with copper sulphate crystals. That must be amazing. Art? I don't know.

I'm afraid the advent of "concept art" began the diminishment of applied art, that is art which is made in the usual ways with pencil, paint, paper, clay, bronze,. You know the OLD FASHIONED stuff. There's still plenty of that out there and much if it is good, but this edgy concept (crap) is what gets the headlines.

How many people (not museums) would pay to own this stuff? Few, very few.

And I'm not one of the few.
