Top 50 Scariest Horror Movies

Top 50 scariest horror movies of all time - Halloween movies - Boston.com

All comments should begin, "This is a bogus list because. . . ."

I'd finish that sentence with "The Haunting isn't on it." That's the 1963 version, of course, and still one of the scariest movies I've ever seen. Shirley Jackson's novel The Haunting of Hill House is maybe even scarier.

This list is evidence of the problems faced by THE BOSTON GLOBE.

I do endorse the inclusion of the first WONKA movie (but not in the top 50) and the cogent choice of QUATERMASS AND THE PIT, but many of the most obvious missing items that are much more frightening than, say, OPEN WATER or Hambone in THE SILENCE OF THE LAMBS or particularly such goofy fare as JACOB'S LADDER and ALTERED STATES, include:

THE HAUNTING, indeed
PSYCHO (given all the suspense films they mix into this list)
ONIBABA
THREE CASES OF MURDER
EYES WITHOUT A FACE
BLACK SABBATH/THE THREE FACES OF FEAR (preferably with Karloff's own voice)
THE BODY SNATCHER (Karloff/Lugosi Lewton Unit)
CAT PEOPLE (even the remakes aren't out of place on the list as it stands)
HOUR OF THE WOLF
DEAD OF NIGHT (why not)
...something like MARTYRS well ahead of something like SAW, certainly. Even INVADERS FROM MARS, either the '50s or '90s version, might elevate this list.

A list like this without Murnau's NOSFERATU isn't valid. Period.

Also, if JESUS CAMP is included, why not Riefenstahl's TRIUMPH DES WILLENS?

THE EXORCIST isn't that scary, really. Seems more like a gross-out pukefest to me. And even my mother laughs at THE TEXAS CHAISAW MASSACRE these days. Honest.

Not to mention that 'The Thing', while scary, is hardly #1 material.
