The Decline of Western Civilization Continues Apace

'NYPD Blue' court ruling opens the door to more nudity - NYPOST.com: "The result of the latest ruling is that 'because networks know that they won't be fined for [showing bare buns on screen], they know that it is another tool in the arsenal to engage viewers,' says Lawrence Meyers, editor of 'Inside the TV Writer's Room' and 'Picket Fences' story editor."

You really don't want to get me started on this one! The decision in this case has followed the fate of the previous FCC v FOX case. The most recent decision in that case found that the FCC`s policy on "fleeting profanities" was "unconstitutionally vague, creating a chilling effect." Based on that decision the decision in this case was inevitable.

The writer of the article mentioned in this post is basically full of crap. The FCC's change in policy reversed everything that the Commission had been doing for the 25 years before the ruling, and that includes nudity - male and female. Until "NYPD Blue" producers didn't go wild with their freedom, and even the producers of that show didn't go that far. In Canada, where nudity is permitted any time during the day so long as it is "non-sexual" and the scene in "NYPD Blue" would fall into that category. Canadian broadcasters have not gone wild with their freedom, and Canadian TV is pretty much by definition desperate for viewers. This decision will not result in nudity in every broadcast TV show, or most broadcast TV shows and maybe not any broadcast TV shows.

Indeed, Bill, this actually marks an ascent...I could certainly stand to see more of most of the actresses on DA VINCI'S INQUEST repeats. Brent is correct that not much is likely to change in US prodctions, though PBS might...might...loosen up again.
