I had just recently read that he had Alzheimers and couldn't write any more. This is a shame. I like his books a lot, especially the non series ones like OUT OF THE BLACKOUT and THE MASTERS OF THE HOUSE and THE SKELETON IN THE GRASS. He also wrote a lot of short and amusing short stories.

RIP

Sad news, indeed.

I'm surprised to hear he had Alzheimer's because he was writing well-crafted, intricately-plotted mysteries until quite recently. In addition to his mystery novels and short stories (many of which have marvelous twist endings), his analysis of Agatha Christie, A Talent to Deceive, is an excellent look into Christie's work and methods.

I met him about 30 years ago at Murder by the Book in Houston. I didn't get him to sign my copy of A Talent to Deceive, however, and I've regretted it ever since.
