T.R. Fehrenbach, R. I. P.

San Antonio Express-NewsNoted Texas historian and longtime San Antonio Express-News columnist T.R. Fehrenbach has passed away, his administrative assistant Tina Ingel confirmed Sunday.

The former head of the Texas Historical Commission, Fehrenbach died of a congenital heart condition. He was 88. The iconic local author was one of the longest running Express-News columnists, with his work here spanning about three decades. He stopped contributing to the Express-News in late August, citing health reasons.

Admirers of his writing style said he often used the lessons of the past to guide his analysis of current events. His most famous work, “Lone Star: A History of Texas and the Texans,” has been called the most widely read history of the state.

T.R.'s "Remember the Alamo" was a great alternate history tale from ANALOG where the protagonist goes back in time and meets Davy Crockett (who carries a guitar) and Jim Bowie (whose famous knife is a switchblade.

He was supposed to be a special guest at the recent Worldcon, thanks to that story, but his health prevented his attendance.
