I haven't seen True Detective, but I already knew about The King in Yellow (I also know who Timothy Ligotti is.)
I was shocked when I read the King in Yellow to find some of the stories where sappy romances. Of course, that was what Chambers was known for during his life time.

Of course some of us didn't need pompous blowhards to tell us about "The King in Yellow" but got the Chambers reference immediately.
