Two of the Hatfield sons, Elias and Detroit, later worked as detectives (euphemism for hired guns) for the railroad and opened a saloon in Fayette County, WV. They died in a shootout unrelated to the feud. They had a dispute with a rival next town over who had a customer base in the community of miners, immigrants from Italy, who lived locally. Pistols were drawn and all three men died.

As a boy, my grandfather was a neighbor of the Hatfields and used to tell us about the night he stayed over with Devil Anse Hatfield and got bit by a pet racoon.
