This isn't about a changed pronunciation but why do TV news people insist on pronouncing "route" as if it is "rout"?

If you pronounce route as "root" south of the Mason-Dixon Line, people will think you're referring to what holds a plant in the ground.

Deb is right. In Texas "route" is always "rout."
