Beetlejuice and Large Marge alone make it a worthwhile list.

Lou Costello in The Time of Their Lives.

How could they overlook Lou?

Jeff Meyerson said...

True. Can't believe I forgot that. It is Jackie's favorite Abbott & Costello movie.

I was going to say Lou Costello, but you guys beat me to it. Great movie. And that voice calling Melody still creeps out my brother.

What frightens me is that anyone would even have a favorite Abbott and Costello movie.

Mine is ". . . Meet Frankenstein."

I'm partial to "Lost in a Harem". Tough to beat the Jimmy Dorsey Orchestra in fezzes, and A&C's Kokomoko version of "Slowly I turn...". But on the original subject, where's Rex Harrison in The Ghost & Mrs Muir?

mybillcrider said...

Another good one.

Art Scott said...

Which good? A&C movie or movie ghost?

mybillcrider said...

Both, now that you mention it, although I prefer the Stooges version of "Slowly I Turn."

I know that I am going to sound like a grumpy old man when I post this and I guess that at age 59 I can be considered old but this list demonstrates one of the problems with lists on the Internet. The tenth ghost is the ghost from The Ring, a movie the author admits he has never seen. First of all, he has had 14 years to see The Ring and he hasn't bothered to do so, but feels he is qualified to write a list about ghosts in horror movies. Second, you have to wonder what else he hasn't seen--such as, I'd be willing to bet any Abbott and Costello movie. And third, he does not realize that putting a movie on his list when he has not seen the movie seriously undermines his credibility.

I don't think anybody who makes these lists worries a lot about credibility.

No love for "Topper"?

/Well, what did I expect from a Millenial "listicle" writer who's so lazy he can't even be bothered to see one of the movies he includes on his list?

I loved the Topper TV series when I was a kid. The movies varied in quality, from really good to awful.

Of course, Cary Grant & Constance Bennett in Topper (the list writer probably never heard of either), Charles Laughton in The Canterville Ghost, and a bit more obscure, Dick Powell (as ghost of a German shepherd) & Joyce Holden (as ghost of a horse) in You Never Can Tell, a whodunit!

I love YOU NEVER CAN TELL and have mentioned it here several times. In fact, now that you've mentioned it, I'm going to rerun my review of it for the Overlooked Movies on Tuesday.

I seem to have rung the bell with that one! Cranks may complain that Rex and Goldie are reincarnates, not ghosts, but that's quibbling.

How could I forget one of my 1970s secret husbands, Warren Beatty, in HEAVEN CAN WAIT?

A classic, and so is HERE COMES MR. JORDAN.

As lists go, this one is a major misfire. Any list that leaves out the Banshee from DARBY O'GILL AND THE LITTLE PEOPLE and several ectoplasmic characters in THE FRIGHTENERS, among others (the original CANTERVILLE GHOST, with Charles Laughton, anyone?) is not worth the pixels it's made of. (Agree strongly about ABBOTT AND COSTELLO MEET FRANKENSTEIN, although strictly speaking there are no ghosts in it.)

Topper..The Ghost and Mrs. Muir...Maybe the problem is that anything before (oh, say) 1970 doesn't count? Because those ghosts weren't scary?
